“Little Susie” happens to be the name of three things, each of them delightful. It is the title of Ray Bryant’s first Columbia album, of his current best-selling record, and of his altogether charming daughter. A musician of increasing popu- larity and importance, Ray Bryant is one of the most versatile pianists around these days, and a special hero of those who deplore the “one-arm” school of playing. (Among Ray’s own delights are the work of Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum.) Born on Christmas Eve, 1931, in Philadelphia, Ray began picking out tunes on the piano when he was six. His mother, an accomplished pianist, gave him his preliminary instruction, and thereafter he studied with several neighborhood. teachers, dabbled with double bass and toyed with the tuba. But piano remained first and foremost in his mind, and when he was fourteen he joined the musicians’ local union. (“I made more money than my teachers” he has remarked.) Soon he was house pianist at the Blue Note in Philadelphia, and remained there for two years before touring with a trio accompanying Carmen MacRae. In 1958 he joined the Jo Jones Trio, with his brother Tom on bass, and decided then and there that he would one day have his own group.
That same year he moved to New York and began to be heard around town in such spots as the Vanguard (Sonny Rollins Quartet), Metropole (Charlie Shavers Quartet) and The Five Spot, free-lanced at The Roundtable and The Embers, and accom- panied Ella Fitzgerald for a month of summer touring. Returning to New York, he felt that the time had arrived to launch his own Trio.
Encouraging engagements in Toronto and Rochester brought even more encour- aging re-engagements, and offers from the Vanguard and Boston’s Storyville soon. came through. Columbia representatives heard Ray while he was at the Vanguard, signed him at once, and the present collection is the result. The title tune, Little Susie, is a Bryant original, and has already made its point as a single record of impressive sales. So, here is Ray Bryant with Little Susie and some other fine tunes, a brilliant introduction to one of the finest young pianists of the day. Brother Tommy Bryant is on bass, and Eddie Locke and Gus Johnson alternate on drums.
